Lexington For Everyone & local candidates discuss land use policies

Local Lexington candidates for Mayor and Council participated in an informational event with Lexington For Everyone on April 18 at Base 249.

It can be achieved: A civil discussion about public policy where different perspectives and experiences are shared and heard.

Earlier this week, Lexington For Everyone held an informational meeting for candidates running for local office. Both longtime incumbents and political newcomers came together to listen to information about the impact that local land use policies have on our community.

Lexington for Everyone board members advocated for balanced, common-sense land policies. For too long, Lexington residents have been given the false choice of whether we want to protect our iconic horse farms vs. creating more jobs and housing opportunities.

We believe we can do both. And that belief only strengthened after meeting with 25 local candidates. From the city center to the rural parts of the county, candidates shared what they are hearing from residents.

A few common themes emerged:
• Everyone is feeling the impact of skyrocketing housing prices, which are making the dream of homeownership more difficult.
• Infill redevelopment is a worthwhile goal and important tool for accommodating growth, but the process and policies need streamlining and improvement to be effective. In addition, placing all the burden of growth on our established neighborhoods is not popular within those neighborhoods.
• There is a willingness to work together – to hear all voices of the community – as the city shapes the next Comprehensive Plan, which is updated every 5 years and sets the direction for policies and regulations related to our city’s growth and development across several areas including jobs, housing affordability, equity and urban/rural balance.

Land use policies impact all facets of our lives and our community — everything from homes to jobs to equity. As the city embarks upon creation of the next Comprehensive Plan, don’t sit on the sidelines. These issues are too important to our future. We encourage you to make your voices heard with your councilmember and to continue to check back for updates on our efforts. Together, we can ensure that Lexington IS for Everyone.
